This walk will take you along a sample of natural surface trails on the West side of Walney Road. The trails are in excellent condition and are suitable for families.

  1. The walk starts from the parking area along the west side of Walney Road adjacent to Walney Pond. Overflow parking is available across the street. Take the bridge across Walney Pond. Turn right on the other side of the pond. Turn left at the next trail intersection so that you enter the woods and cross a bridge over Big Rocky Run.
  2. After crossing the bridge a trail intersects from the right. A sign indicates that the Visitor Center is either way. Take the trail on the left. A service road intersects from the right. Stay on the current trail. It will shortly cross a stream on a bridge.
  3. The trail crosses the same stream on another bridge.
  4. A service road intersects from the right. Continue straight on the present trail.
  5. The trail turns to the right and comes to a trail intersection with a bridge on the left. Turn left to follow the trail across the bridge.
  6. Turn right at the next trail intersection. The trail will climb a hill.
  7. This is the site of an old icehouse. The trail turns to the right at this point.
  8. Turn left just prior to the smokehouse.
  9. The trail leads to the Visitor Center building. The entrance is at the door on the right. After visiting here walk between the buildings towards the greenhouse. Turn left onto the asphalt trail leading down the hill away from the greenhouse.
  10. Turn left onto the intersecting asphalt trail just prior to the amphitheater. After reaching the side of the amphitheater take the natural surface trail to the right. It will cross another trail after going only a short distance.
  11. The trail crosses a bridge and climbs a hill on steps.
  12. Turn left at the next trail intersection. Both trails are marked North Loop.
  13. After a long distance a trail intersects from the left. A sign indicates this is the Wild Turkey Trail. Continue on the trail to the right.
  14. Another trail intersects a short distance later. Turn right. A sign should indicate that you are on the North Loop.
  15. A service road intersects on the left. Continue straight on the present trail.
  16. Turn left at the next trail intersection. You are back at the start of the North Loop trail.
  17. The trail goes down the hill on steps and crosses a bridge. Turn right at the next trail intersection.
  18. A trail intersects from the left. Continue to the right on the present trail.
  19. The trail crosses a bridge. Turn left at the trail intersection on the other side and walk up the hill on steps.
  20. A short trail intersects from the left. Continue on the trail to the right. After a short distance it crosses a service road.
  21. A service road intersects on the right. Continue straight on the present trail.
  22. A trail intersects from the right. Take the trail to the left. The trail crosses a bridge over Big Rocky Run. Once in the clearing at the next trail intersection go to the right.
  23. Take the bridge to the left over Walney Pond back to the parking area and the end of the walk.
